AREA’S FIRST BUS TO GO ON DISPLAY THIS SATURDAY

The Morongo Basin’s first bus will be on display at the Old Schoolhouse Museum in Twentynine Palms Saturday. The bus, a 1928 Chevrolet, owned and operated by Johnnie Hastie, seated 12 passengers and included a wood-burning stove. Hastie drove the bus from Twentynine Palms to Banning and back every day, with stops in Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and Morongo Valley. To preserve this historic precursor to our current Morongo Basin Transit Authority (MBTA), the Twentynine Palms Historical Society acquired the remains of this bus, and then established a committee to restore it. Visitors to the Old Schoolhouse Museum will be able to view the restored bus from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The museum is located at 6760 National Park Drive in Twentynine Palms.
