An anti-bullying protest took place at last night’s Morongo Unified School District board meeting. Reporter Andrew Dieleman was there, and files this report…
More than 40 students, teachers, parents, and grandparents of students met at last night’s Morongo Unified School District board meeting. Their message was clear: Something must be done about bullying in the school district. Protestors waved signs that read “Stop School Bullying” and “Bullying Stops Here.” Public comments made by the protestors were immensely critical of the lack of enforcement of current anti-bullying programs and included impassioned testimonies from bullying victims and the families of bullying victims. Many of the board members stayed after the meeting had adjourned to speak with protestors on the matter.
During the meeting, which began at 5 p.m., the board held two work study sessions, the first on the Local Control Accountability Plan, which coordinates needs and plans for the district with budgeting. Board members made multiple suggestions to improve the campuses and student learning. The second work study session was a review of the completed 2018 long-range facilities master plan for the district. The board reviewed the master plan for errors and made needed corrections. In open session, beginning at 7 p.m., the board approved the replacement of outdated history textbooks with updated versions for the district, awarded a contract for district-wide expansion and upgrades to current network cabling systems, and adopted the completion of the 2018 long range facilities master plan for the district.
