Con artists continue try to scam vulnerable and gullible people. Managing editor Tami Roleff gives one example…
Con artists attempted to scam a Yucca Valley man out of his money recently. According to a Sheriff’s report, a man in the 7000 block of Cholla Avenue received an e-mail from someone in the Ukraine who said he needed help for children who needed heart transplants. The Yucca Valley man then received a letter that included a check for nearly $3000, with instructions to keep $400 and send the rest back via a money order. When the Yucca Valley man called the bank to verify the check’s authenticity, he was told the check had been stolen. A reminder from the Sheriff’s department, fake cashier checks and money orders are common. Never cash a check or money order and send the cash back to the sender. If you realize you’ve been scammed, notify the National Consumers’ League Fraud Center or call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
