A Twentynine Palms man was arrested early Thursday morning, accused of attempted murder after he shot at a man in the Hanson Tract area. According to the Sheriff Department, a man saw a white sedan driving slowly and without its lights on through the neighborhood in the 7400 block of Kellogg Avenue about 11 p.m., and tried to take a photo of the car’s license plate. The driver of the vehicle got upset, and started yelling at the man and brandished a handgun before speeding away. The witness called 911 and attempted to find the man. Shortly after another vehicle, this one a black Willy’s-style Jeep—which the witness said was driven by the same man—drove by, and the driver, later identified as Mark White, 58, pointed the gun at the victim and fired five shots, before speeding off on Sherman Hoyt. The witness said the bullets missed him and his vehicle. Many neighbors called 911 to report shots fired in the area. The Sheriff’s Department called in a helicopter to aid in the search for the shooter. The investigation led deputies to a home in the 7400 block of Sherman Hoyt, and deputies used a public address system for residents to come out. White came out and was detained without incident. The witness identified White as the shooter. Several firearms were collected from White’s home. Mark White was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, booked at the Morongo Basin Jail, with his bail set at $1 million.
