AN ARREST AFTER A SUSPECTED ARSON FIRE IN TWENTYNINE PALMS

A man who was arrested for the second time in three days is accused of setting a fire Saturday night. About 10 p.m., fire crews were called to a wash south of the America’s Best Value Inn, in the 71800 block of Highway 62 in Twentynine Palms for a small fire of trash and debris. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze before it spread to nearby vegetation. Sheriff’s deputies located Matthew Shipman, 39, nearby and determined that he had stolen linen from the motel and used it to start the fire in the wash. Matthew Shipman was arrested for investigation of arson, booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, with his bail set at $50,000. Shipman was also arrested about 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 71700 block of Highway 62 in Twentynine Palms for being drunk and disorderly. He was cited and released.
