Senate Bill 573, which takes affect January 1, requires all dogs and cats being claimed by their owners, adopted to new owners, or transferred to animal rescue groups be microchipped. This new mandate will add an additional cost of $20 per for owners claiming their pets and for adopters.
For pets that have collars and tags/ licenses, those collars can come off and get lost. A microchip is a permanent form of identification, increasing the ability of the shelter to contact an owner of a lost pet and reuniting them.
