“All-female takeover” at Snakebite Roadhouse with bands Flames of Durga, Midnight Cowgirls (08/01)
On Thursday, July 23, local rock n’ roll trio Flames of Durga joined me on the afternoon air at Z107.7FM. The band was formed in 2014 by twin sisters Beah and Cecilia Romero, playing bass and guitar, respectively. On Sunday night, the band debuted their new lineup with drummer Alejandra Robles Luna at an outdoor show under the stars at Mon Petit Mojave.
“Originally we connected online at first. We were acquainted for a few years before this came to be. We were also familiar with Alejandra’s previous band, La Butcherettes, and then also Coco Vera. We were super stoked she reached out to us because we were fans of her..
“I love the band, and I’ve seen the band play before, and I was like, “They need me.” Their music and their performance so inspired me; I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.”
In addition to playing electric live shows at venues throughout the Hi-Desert, Flames of Durga has frequently been featured on Z107.7’s Local Music Showcase with Pat Kearns. The regular Sunday program has highlighted tracks from their eponymous first album, as well as songs like the emotion-drenched “Spirit Guide,” which was released as a single in 2025.
“Spirit Guide is a really special track close to our heart. The songwriting process of it came out when Ceci and I were really going through a hard time, and we just needed to sing about it.
It’s basically a prayer and song form. Us calling out and reaching out to something greater than ourselves, to a higher power, to help give us that strength to get through what we need to get through. When our dad was still alive, he got to listen to the recording of it, and he ended up passing away before we were able to release the track. It just seems so appropriate to honor him in that track, and it’s called Spirit Guide, and he’s definitely one of our spirit guides now watching over.”
Flames of Durga continues their live show series with a free show this evening at Snakebite Roadhouse, located at 55405 Twentynine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley. The band will take the stage at 8:30 p.m., with the Midnight Cowgirls and DJ Pearl Charles also on the bill.
