A unique garden is coming to life in the desert of Johnson Valley. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has more on the “Paul Hook Desert Dreams Garden”…
In Johnson Valley, a once sandy five-acre slope adjacent to the Johnson Valley Improvement Association Community Center on Quail Bush Road is being transformed into a unique desert oasis replete with a drought-tolerant, waterwise garden, recirculating fountain and historical point of interest. Named for the Johnson Valley resident who purchased and donated the property, the Paul Van Hook Desert Dreams Garden is taking shape thanks to additional contributions of time, funds, gardening equipment, and material. Flowering plants and trees are already drawing visitors including native hummingbirds and bees needed for pollination. Walking paths with benches, antique tractors, decorative boulders and rocks have transformed the site while care has been taken to leave native vegetation undisturbed. A bit of the original route of Old Woman Springs Road traverses the property and is being preserved. The Johnson Valley Improvement Association invites you to stop by and take a look.
