Five homes have been selected for Reach Out Morongo Basin’s Parade of Homes tour on February 16. Now in its 16th year, the fundraiser pays for services to Morongo Basin senior and disabled residents. The self-guided tour features extraordinary homes in Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree, and Yucca Valley. In the coming days Z107.7 will preview the homes on the tour. Today we are in Joshua Tree. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz with a sneak peak of two unique homes there…
Parade of Homes ticket holders may begin the self-guided tour anywhere they like. Today, we’re in Joshua Tree for a sneak peek at two stand-out properties. Harrison House is a landmark straw bale structure built by composer Lou Harrison in 2002. The home features a vaulted great room proportionately designed as a superb and intimate sound environment. Among its unusual features, the front gate is made of recycled Bay Bridge steel by artist Mark Bulwinkle. Today, Harrison House hosts an artist residency and performance program for international artists and environmental activists.
JT2 on the border of Joshua Tree National Park offers expansive views of the Morongo Basin. Owned by Ida Alwin, this is a 100 percent off-grid, sustainable home. Solar panels and a private well make the property completely independent of outside utilities. Built with luxury in mind this roomy three bedroom boasts a bespoke kitchen among its many amenities.
