A RAUCOUS SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, TEACHERS INDICATE POSSIBLE STRIKE

Last night’s school board meeting was a loud one. With a room full of angry teachers, flyers warning of a possible strike, and angry speeches, the board heard loud and clear that two years without a contract is unacceptable. Reporter David Haldane was there and filed this report…
Teachers in the Morongo Unified School District may be headed for a strike. That was the message of a flyer handed out at last night’s raucous school board meeting attended by a standing-room-only crowd of jeering educators wearing blue Morongo Teachers Association T-shirts.
The crowd seemed especially incensed by an otherwise innocuous agenda item increasing compensation for district administrators. The board quickly removed it from consideration, but not fast enough to stem a torrent of angry speeches blasting them for rejecting teachers’ demands despite a budget surplus of $19 million.
Union negotiators recently rejected an offer the district said would bring annual starting salaries from $46,300 to $48,900 and top pay from $90,500 to $103,000.
Bottom line: the teachers want more.
