Friends and family of the Yucca Valley motorcycle rider who was killed Saturday in a crash have planned a rally today (Wednesday, March 28) at the scene where he died. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., they will be in front of the Yucca Valley AM/PM gas station just east of Balsa Avenue and Highway 62. They—and many others—believe there should be a physical barrier between the east- and westbound traffic lanes to prevent left-hand turns into the gas station. Chad Smithling, 50, was riding his motorcycle eastbound on the highway when a driver in an SUV, traveling westbound, crossed solid double yellow lines to pull into the driveway. Smithling broadsided the vehicle and was thrown off his motorcycle and died at the scene. Chad Smithling is a single father of three children, including a 10-year-old daughter. His family has set up a fundraiser to help with his funeral expenses.
