A LOOK BACK AT 2017: CRIME

As 2017 comes to a close, Z107.7 News looks back at some of the top stories of the year. Our top crime story of 2017 was the double murder of two Twentynine Palms women in March. Shortly before midnight, March 24, Sheriff’s investigators say Rafael Aikens, 22, shot Christy McKissic, 32, in her bed in her home in the 7700 block of Bedouin Avenue. When McKissic’s mother, Renee Metcalf, 62, who had been sleeping in an adjacent room, got up to investigate, investigators say he shot and killed her too. McKissic’s 10-year-old daughter was also at home at the time of the shooting; detectives said she told them Aikens came into her room but did not shoot her. Rafael Aikens, who was an active-duty Marine at the time of the murders, is being held on $3.5 million bail pending his trial for the double murder.
