In our recent coverage of the proposed new County Charter, Z107.7 News mistakenly reported the proposed new charter would appear on the November 3 Election Ballot under the title, “The San Bernardino County Supervisor Compensation Reduction and Term Limits Initiative.” That title is associated with another ballot initiative and unrelated to the proposed new County Charter. The county’s revised charter will be on the November 3 ballot as “Revised Charter: County of San Bernardino.” Z107.7 News regrets the error.

This November, voters in our county will decide if a proposed new county charter will guide county government operations in the coming years or if public interests will be best served with the existing charter left in place. The option will appear under a ballot measure entitled, “Revised Charter: County of San Bernardino.” Developed by the County Board of Supervisors, the proposed new charter aims to replace the current, century-old charter with one that reflects modern business practices, prioritizes transparency in county government, and increases opportunities for public involvement.

Today we continue our ongoing review of the proposed charter with a look at a new provision on emergency preparedness. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz…

If adopted, the new charter will require that the county establish and maintain a strategic stockpile of vital supplies, equipment, and other materials needed for the protection of life and property in the event of a disaster or emergency such as an earthquake or infectious disease pandemic. The provision stipulates the stockpile would have to be rotated and come under periodic review by county supervisors or their appointees.

In our next report, we’ll look at the provision on term limits for county supervisors.

The public may review specifics of the proposed new charter and leave comments at newcharter.sbcounty.gov
