Long before the Salton Sea, ancient Lake Cahuilla covered some 2,200 square miles of present day’s Coachella and Imperial valleys. The lake was last seen sometime after 1580. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells of an opportunity to learn why the lake matters to us today…
Freshwater Lake Cahuilla filled the Salton Sink and dried up multiple times over two millennia. Ancient birds and peoples depended on the lake just as modern day communities depend on the Salton Sea. The Morongo Basin Historical Society’s Second Wednesday Lecture Series presents “Important Birds of Ancient Lake Cahuilla and the Salton Sea.” College of the Desert Professor of Natural Resources Kurt Leuschner will share his knowledge of special birds associated with the ancient lake which covered six times the area of today’s Salton Sea. Join the Morongo Basin Historical Society this Wednesday, November 8, for this special Second Wednesday Lecture Series beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum in the Yucca Valley Community Complex. A $5 donation is requested.
