A CUT LINE RESULTS IN PHONE, CELL PHONE AND INTERNET OUTAGES

Morongo Basin residents experienced Internet and cell phone service outages for most of Tuesday. The outage affected Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T customers. Many area businesses were unable to process credit and debit cards and some closed, including several local banks. According to San Bernardino County Fire Division Chief John Chamberlin, a trunkline was struck in the Palm Springs area at approximately 10:15 Tuesday morning. A representative for Sprint said the problem could have stemmed from a fiber line cut. AT&T spokesperson Meredith Red said the origin of the problem was due to “an issue experienced by another carrier.” As of 3:53 Tuesday afternoon, all cellular and internet services, emergency services, as well as ATMs and credit card networks were back online. It was originally anticipated that repair time could be as much as two days, but according to Division Chief Chamberlin, a permanent repair is already in place.
