A 75-year-old woman was found near Joshua Tree National Park 10 hours after calling park rangers to report she was in distress. A park spokesperson said the local woman, who was not identified, had called at 11 a.m. Sunday saying she had started hiking up the old Quail Springs Road in Joshua Tree and had run out of water. An intensive search with park staff and civilian volunteers, assisted with a Marine Helicopter equipped with thermal imaging, was launched. The woman was located by crew of federal firefighters from the Black Rock station at about 9 p.m. Sunday night, about one mile from the park boundary in property owned by Mojave Desert Land Trust. The firefighters were able to assist her out of the area safely.
