Local students from eight local students participated in a spelling bee… “Frequency…F-R-E-Q-U-E-N-C-Y, frequency!” That was the tie breaking word that won it for Yucca Mesa Elementary fifth grade student, Psypris Serano taking first place. When asked how it felt her reaction was, “When I heard I won, I wanted to cry!” Yucca Mesa Elementary hosted the 2nd Annual District Spelling Bee for 32 elementary students between fourth and sixth grades. Four students representing each school had to spell words ranging from maritime to idiosyncratic. Second place winner was Landers Elementary student Logan Simms and third place was Yucca Valley Elementary student Zackary Bunn. The panel of readers and judges were Dr. Deborah Turner, Irene Johnson, Kathi Papp, and Angela Gay. Teachers and Organizers of the event, Cheryl Hopton, Jennifer Buma, and Jessica Hadley hope that eventually the students are able to compete at the national level. Seeing what these kids accomplished, I would say they are well prepared!
