If you are driving in the City of Twentynine Palms, you had better mind your Ps and Qs. A crackdown on traffic laws has seen the number of tickets written more than triple. Reporter David Haldane says the increased enforcement is addressing a real problem in the city…
A stepped-up effort by the City of Twentynine Palms to enforce traffic laws may already be having a positive effect. So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities, compared to two by this time last year. The increased vigilance against traffic scofflawas has resulted in a dramatic surge in citations year-to-date; from 131 in 2015 to 559 this year, an increase of nearly 327 percent.
Jeff Joling, a captain with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who doubles as the city’s police chief, says the new emphasis on traffic enforcement comes following a number of traffic collisions causing injuries and fatalities.
His advice, among other things: If you come to a crosswalk, yield to pedestrians.
Bottom line: If you’re driving in Twentynine Palms, and don’t want a ticket, better slow down and watch out.
