Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council gathers to address issues around vacation home rentals, racism, redistricting, and Project Phoenix. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details …
The Twentynine Palms City Council meets tonight to confront a variety of issues. Regarding concerns around vacation home rentals (VHR), the council will consider hiring a private security firm to enforce noise and safety rules. Starting as a pilot program through April of 2022, the patrols would be active Friday and Saturday evenings. The city currently has 188 active VHRs and 77 permits pending.
In a discussion around spending, the council will consider transferring the city’s allocation of American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds to the General Fund.
The council will discuss and likely adopt a resolution that declares racism a public health crisis.
Citing “public interest” and invoking eminent domain, the council will discuss and likely acquire property located at Split Rock and Desert Queen Avenues to be used as a parking lot for Project Phoenix.
After facing harsh criticism for their lack of public outreach on the redistricting issue, the council will consider hiring a public relations firm to facilitate the campaign.
The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road. The meeting is available via live-stream and on-demand through the city’s website, 29palms.org.
