29 Palms ahead of conservation curve when it comes to saving water

On Friday’s (April 21) Up Close Show, host Gary Daigneault spoke with Matt Schragge, the General Manager of the Twentynine Palms Water District.

Schragge explained that Twentynine Palms, and the Hi-Desert in general, have long been considerate of their water usage, and that the water use numbers locally are trending toward conservation.

Schragge: “So from last year’s production numbers, I looked at this prior to coming in, we’re 60 million gallons less from last year. From 2013, we’re 61 million gallons less. And that’s due to conservation, people understanding that you just don’t have water to waste, and some of the things in our drought water shortage contingency plan. People are understanding these efforts and doing a really good job of keeping water on their property.”

Daigneault inquired about the state’s efforts to keep water use down, and how water limits are enforced on the State and local levels. Schragge said:

“As water district’s we don’t have a ticket book to write a fine. You can go through the violation process, but when we talk to customers and educate them, especially in Twentynine Palms, we use the saying ‘Through Education, Don’t Violate,’ we haven’t had to violate anybody for the most part.”
