26 OF 53 ARTISTS NAMED FOR NATIONAL PARK ART SHOW ARE LOCAL

Of the 53 artists selected for the second annual Joshua Tree National Park Art Exposition, 26 are local to the Morongo Basin. Twentynine Palms artists include Robert Arnett, Chuck Caplinger, Anne Lear, Mark Spangenberg, and Gillyan Thorburn.
From Joshua Tree are Fred Fulmer, Coco Hall, James Hammons, Gerhard Kammer, Anahita King, Eva Montville, Vann Nguyen, Jenifer Palmer-Lacy, Drew Reese, Melissa Spurr, Karine Swenson, Alita Van Vliet, and Judy Wold.
Yucca Valley artists include Janis Commentz, John Greenfield, Kathleen Klopfenstein, Daniel Lee, Tanner McGuire, Esther Shaw, Nichole Vikdal, and Krista Wargo.
The art exposition received 377 entries from 142 artists. The juried and judged art show will be held December 5, 6, and 7 at the 29 Palms Art Gallery in Twentynine Palms, and will be on display from December 5 through December 28. Out-of-state artists in the exhibition will be Steve Anderson of Atlanta, Georgia, who was an artist-in-residence at Joshua Tree National Park in 2011; Naomi Brown of Queen Creek, Arizona; Shawn Hall of New Orleans, Louisiana; Bob Solete of Forest Hills, New York; and Kim Zarney of Cleveland, Ohio. One international entry was selected, Olivia Parkes, a former Joshua Tree National Park artist-in-residence, who submitted her artwork entry from Berlin, Germany.

California artists include: Jane S. Culp of Anza; Martha Villegas of Cathedral City; Linda Brown of Claremont; George Comer of Corona; Caroline PM Jones of Culver City; Robert Miramontes of Desert Hot Springs; Marc Evans of Hermosa Beach; Richard Sparks of Hesperia; Kristin Winters of La Quinta; Claudia Bucher and E.E. Jacks of Norwalk; Christopher X Bost of Oakland; Dianne Bennett of Ojai; Rose Irelan of Poway; Don Chambers of Redlands; Valerie Messervy Birkhoff of San Francisco; Deborah Hobbs of San Luis Obispo; Howard Spector of South Pasadena; Jeff Skelly of Sunland; Michael Hornyak of Tujunga; and Greg Lucker of Wildomar.

One piece of art from each of the 53 artists will now go into the art exhibition, which will be juried for awards on Dec. 4 by a panel of three jurors: Mike Buchheit, photographer and Director of Grand Canyon Field Institute; Katherine Hough, Chief Curator, Palm Springs Art Museum; and Julie Lazar, Director of International Contemporary Arts Network, San Francisco, and founding Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
