Each year in California, about 2 ½ million people turn to a free referral service for help with life’s problems. 2-1-1 is a free phone number and online service that can help Californians find heating or utility assistance, shelter, even the closest food bank. People also call 2-1-1 for everyday important non-emergency needs, such as home health care for a relative, developmental screening for a child, job training or free tax filing support. In times of a disaster, 2-1-1 is a non-emergency number people can call for information and assistance. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and in 150 different languages.
