The Salton Sea wetland habitat restoration project has received a $14 million grant to sustain migrating birds and fish in the sea. The California Department of Water Resources will use the voter-approved bond funds to build about 640 acres of wetlands where the New River flows into the sea northwest of Westmorland. The restoration project is expected to improve the habitat for pelicans, cormorants, and the tilapia fish they feed on.
