Saturday was Community Clean-up Day in Twentynine Palms. Along with the free dumpsters at Luckie Park sponsored by the City and Burrtec, the Rotary Club sponsored some 12 local community groups and sports teams. They were assigned to cleanup neighborhoods identified by residents. The event was highly successful, with literally hundreds of bags of trash removed by the volunteers in areas all around the city. Reporter Heather Clisby caught up with one very dedicated group of high schoolers…
Living in the windy environs of Morongo Basin, trash is a constant problem. To combat the issue, the city of Twentynine Palms partnered with Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services and Twentynine Palms Rotary to host a Community Cleanup Day last Saturday morning.
A general call to residents was issued asking for specific locations that needed attention and a list was made. On the corner of Joshua Drive and Desert Queen Avenue, just a block down from a bustling Farmers Market, the Twentynine Palms High School Interact club was busy with rakes and trash bags led by Club Advisor Lori Cosgriff.
“We’re glad to be out here participating in the Community Cleanup. We just picked up a whole living room! When we got here, there was quite a bit of furniture piled up out here. And probably 20 bags of just general trash.”
The Twentynine Palms High School Interact club is associated with Rotary, and they do service in the community, at school, and an international project every year.
“I’ve got myself about 10 dedicated high schoolers out here and they were willing to come. Notably, two weeks ago they did this as part of the city’s Trash for Cash plan so I think that says something that they were willing to give up two weekends in two months to do this.”
