A female hiker died of a heart attack while hiking 49 Palms Oasis Trail in Joshua Tree National Park yesterday. According to Twentynine Palms Fire Chief Jim Thompson, rescue personnel from Twentynine Palms Fire Department, the Park Service, and Joshua Tree Search and Rescue were called to the recently re-opened hiking trail about 3 p.m. Monday. Despite giving CPR, the 73-year-old woman from Louisiana died. Her name and hometown have not been released by authorities. Two other members of the hiking party were taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center and treated for heat-related issues. Park officials emphasize that visitors should know their personal abilities and limitations when hiking, wear appropriate clothing, have sufficient water, and hikers should know the demands of specific routes especially during the hot summer months.
