TIRE ROUND-UP CORRALS 800 WILD TIRES

Saturday’s tire round up brought Landers residents from all walks of life together for a single goal—to rid Landers rural roads, washes and private properties of discarded tires. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us how it worked out…
Vehicles began lining up well before the 8 a.m. start of what was called “The Greater Landers Monster Tire Round Up.” The came from every corner of this community which has an ongoing problem of illegally discarded vehicle tires perpetrated by those who opt to litter the countryside in order to avoid the $5.31 disposal fee leveled at the Landers landfill. Saturday’s tire amnesty event was organized by the Landers Association, financed through a grant from CalRecycle, and made possible by County Code Enforcement. Throughout the morning load after load of the dead, stray tires were stacked along a stretch of fence at Homestead Valley Park. Some were from people’s own properties, many others came from volunteers who spent the day scouring the roadsides for the eyesore tires. When it was over, an estimated 800 plus tires were removed from this community; their destination is to a special recycling program.
