Public Lands and Chuckwalla Monument focus of BLM meeting next Friday (6/14)

The proposed Chuckwalla National Monument is just one of the many Southern California public lands that will be a topic at a community meeting next Friday, put on by the Bureau of Land Management.

According to a press release from the Dept. of the Interior – the meeting is being held as part of the Biden administration’s commitment to support locally led conservation efforts here in Southern California.

The BLM manages about 15% of California’s lands – that’s 15 million acres of coasts, mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and of course – desert. With the surrounding Mojave and Colorado deserts meeting in our namesake’s National Park, and a newly proposed 600,000 acre National Monument in the Chuckwalla region just south of us – keeping these public lands protected and accessible is an issue that can affect everyone here in the hi-desert.

If all this talk of free public lands has piqued your interest – you’ll want to clear the schedule for the morning of Friday, June 12th. The community meeting will be taking place that morning from 10AM to 12 noon one county over at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio. The meeting is open to the public and the doors will open at 9:30.

WHAT: Community meeting regarding management of the region’s public lands.

WHEN: Friday, June 14 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. PST. Doors will open to the public at 9:30 a.m. PST.

WHERE: Riverside County Fairgrounds, 46263 Oasis Street (Gate 11), Indio, CA 92201.

RSVP: Members of the media are encouraged to RSVP to Michelle Van Der Linden at [email protected] by Thursday, June 13, at 12:00 PM PST.
