MOJAVE DESERT LAND TRUST HELPING REHAB WHITEWATER PRESERVE

The Water fire, which burned about 70 acres at the Whitewater Preserve last August, scorched the popular hiking spot. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the Mojave Desert Land Trust is stepping up to help restore the vegetation…

Whitewater Preserve’s efforts to restore areas affected by last year’s Water Fire are off to a great start, thanks to the Mojave Desert Land Trust. The Land Trust is providing seeds from its conservation seed bank for the restoration project. Thanks to hard-working volunteers and Whitewater’s dedicated rangers, they’ve been able to sow interior goldenbush (Ericameria linearifolia), bladderpod (Peritoma arborea), and East Mojave buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum var. polifolium) seeds in the Whitewater meadow. The ranger staff have been successful germinating a variety of plants in small pots, and soon will be transplanting these to their new homes.
