Morongo Valley firefighters came to the aid of the Marines Thursday morning. According to Firefighter Jones, the convoy of four Marine vehicles were coming up the grade about 8:45 a.m. when the engine in one light infantry vehicle started smoking. The Marines were able to put out most of the fire with their fire extinguishers when they reached the top of the grade, and firefighters dismantled the panels around the engine to put out the rest. A Marine in the back of the vehicle suffered slight smoke inhalation and was taken to the Naval Hospital on board the Combat Center for treatment.
