Marines piloting a Super Huey helicopter made a precautionary landing Tuesday at 6:15 pm at the Twentynine Palms municipal airport. The helicopter, attached to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron-367 in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, was conducting a regularly scheduled exercise on board the Twentynine Palms Combat Center when the pilots noticed a cockpit warning indicator had come on. The pilots landed the Super Huey at the local airport to ensure the safety of the Marines on board the aircraft and of the community. Maintenance Marines determined that the cockpit indicator warning was triggered due to chips in the helicopter’s gear box. Further inspections confirmed there were no other mechanical or structural issues with the Super Huey, no damage to the UH-1Y helicopter or landing site, and no injuries to Marines or civilians.
