MARINE KILLED IN BASE SHOOTING IDENTIFIED

The Marine Corps has identified the Marine involved in a self-inflicted gunshot incident Tuesday on board the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms as Lance Corporal Casey Hayden, 23, of New York. Hayden was assigned to the 7th Marine Regiment stationed at the Marine base. A Marine spokeswoman said Hayden fired several shots about 6:30 a.m. near 4th Street and Sturgis Avenue on board the base, and then shot himself about two hours later. No one else was injured.

Hayden joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was promoted to lance corporal in February. He has been stationed at Twentynine Palms for the past year as an ammunition technician with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
