In a letter posted to Twitter Thursday, the Marine Corps commandant has ordered that it is time “to exclude from our Corps public displays of the Confederate flag in the Marine Corps.” General David Berger wrote that while he understands that some people feel that the flag is a symbol of heritage and regional pride, for others, it brings feelings of pain and rejection because of the country’s history of slavery. Berger explained that the flag has shown it has the power to inflame feelings of division and he cannot have that division in the Marine Corps. And so, he concluded, symbols that have the effect of division must be removed.
