LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS KEPT BUSY YESTERDAY

Firefighters were busy in the Morongo Basin Sunday. Yucca Valley firefighters responded to a car fire at the top of the eastbound Yucca Grade about 10:15 Sunday morning. The Mercury Sable’s engine compartment was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived; thanks to easterly winds, the fire did not spread to the rest of the vehicle, and firefighters were able to put out the fire in just a few minutes.

Then about 2:30 p.m., Morongo Valley firefighters, with assistance from Yucca Valley and CalFire, responded to an RV fire on Aspen Drive, near Valley View Road. According to Captain Andrew Arthen, the driver of the RV had stopped his motorhome and left if running while he got out of the RV to open a gate. When he came back, he noticed the engine was smoking, and soon he saw flames. By the time firefighters had arrived, the 15- to 20-mile per hour winds had spread the blaze to nearby vegetation. Firefighters knocked down both fires in just a few minutes. Arthen said due to the total loss of the vehicle, and the total destruction of the engine compartment, the cause of the fire is undetermined. There were no injuries in either fire.
