As military personnel retire this year, some of whom will be the last American forces withdrawn from Afghanistan, they may find it difficult to readjust to civilian life. Even before the pandemic, retirement from the military came with struggles that included PTSD, disability, and homelessness. Recently, a personal finance website compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on their ability to provide a comfortable military retirement. Reporter Cassidy Taylor tells you where California stands…
WalletHub, a personal finance website, used a data set of 30 key metrics, ranging from veterans per capita to number of VA health facilities to job opportunities for veterans. Overall, California ranks 39th out of 51 in the list of best states for military retirees. California has one of the lowest rates of veterans per capita at 49th, but has the second most VA facilities per veteran, coming just behind New York. California is tied for the highest rate of veteran homelessness with Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and the District of Columbia. The state also falls 47th in job opportunities for veterans and percentage of veteran owned businesses. When it comes to housing, California is at the bottom of the list as the least affordable state. The complete report is available at the link below.
