A long walk through a hot desert will raise funds for a local non-profit. Managing editor Tami Roleff says Kelly Overton will walk from Joshua Tree to Las Vegas…

A Joshua Tree resident will hike nearly 200 miles through the Mojave Desert to raise money for an educational and advocacy non-profit organization. Kelly Overton, the founder of Mojave Animal Protection, will start his 10-day hike in Joshua Tree Monday, July 18, and hike through Twentynine Palms, Amboy, along Route 66, finally ending up in Las Vegas. Overton is hiking to awareness of the plight of the Mojave Desert’s flora and fauna, and to raise funds needed to launch community-based habitat protection programs.
