Yucca Valley Town Council Aquatics & Recreation Workshop recap

The Yucca Valley Town Council held a special workshop to review the current Aquatics and Recreation Center Project design boards before the regular meeting. Unfortunately, there were fewer community members than the Council had hoped for, but the board display invited lively conversation and praise. During the Town Council meeting, the Council honored the outgoing Town Planning Commissioner, Brad Napientek, who has been a powerful force on the Town Planning Commission, and the outgoing Revenue Measure Oversight Commissioner, Larry Burge.

During the Town Council meeting, the Council honored the outgoing Town Planning Commissioner, Brad Napientek, who has been a powerful force on the Town Planning Commission and was present at the meeting—his six years of work for the City and his expertise in Federal housing and safety updates, as well as his work with short-term vacation rentals brought him recognition from the Council. The Council also recognized outgoing Revenue Measure Oversight Commissioner Larry Burge, who was absent from the meeting. Commissioner Burge was honored for his work toward ensuring public safety and quality of life and lowering the cost of the sewer initiative. There are now two vacancies that Yucca Valley will be looking to fill.

HMC Architects and the Dahlin Project Manager Team, represented by Dahlin Principal Stephanie Fujimura and Associate Architect, Erica Dicioccio, presented the Aquatic and Recreation Center update. HMC has been working with Dahlin on completing the details. The branding (ARC) is finalized, and so are the designs for the solar element Canopy which has been updated to 320 kilowatts and will take care of 50 to 60% of the building’s electrical needs. Amenities to note are the Waterslide for the Children’s pool is in the final bid, and the overhead starting slide and video board for swim meets and movie night. In addition, HMC displayed colors and material choices for the exterior and Interior.

The Council then reviewed and approved the contract with SafeworkCM. The town received bids came from Cordoba Corp and SafeworkCM. SafeworkCM won on their experience and well-earned recommendations. SafeworkCM will be responsible for change orders, schedules, and risk management. The new management Team was present at the meeting. Staff noted they would present an updated budget at the next Town Council meeting.

The project schedule for ARC is as follows:

  • Building Document Review approval is projected to take six weeks
  • The contractor bid award will take two months
  • Construction is projected at 16 months and scheduled for 2024
  • The closeout and Grand Opening timeline is one month and forecasted for 2025.

The Council also received and approved the Revenue Measure Oversight Commission reappointment of Joel Camp and Tyler Fowlkes. Lastly, Public Works Engineer, Alex Qishta presented the Staff Report, saying the Little League Drive Project is progressing as expected, and the Onaga Project’s problems with utilities have been resolved.

That project is now 60% completed.
