Yucca Valley Town Council agenda: Farmer’s Market, Senior Center, Town Manager raise

Tomorrow night’s Yucca Valley Town Council meeting will include housekeeping for several town initiatives.

The meeting will begin with a public hearing on town vacancies and associated recruitment and retention efforts. To address the issue of vacancies in the public sector, public agencies are required to present on their status every fiscal year. The council will also review professional services agreements related to improvements at the High Desert Nature Museum and a construction change order for phase two of the Senior Center Modernization Project.

The council will then consider a request for proposals for the operation and management of a farmer’s market within the town. A 2023 survey indicated strong community support for the development of such an event, with 94 percent of participating residents expressing interest. The council has worked with the Planning Commission to establish guidelines for a regular farmers market in Yucca Valley and provided direction at their meeting on February 18th to move forward. Town staff created an RFP to garner interest from experienced operators to lead the new event.

Lastly, the council will review a proposed amendment to the Employment Agreement of Town Manager Curtis Yakimow, last amended in 2021. The town manager is appointed by and reports to the town council. Their role consists of enforcing municipal laws, hiring all town department heads and employees, submitting the annual budget, and overseeing the operations of town functions and departments.

The Town Council recently conducted an evaluation and awarded Yakimow with an “excellent” performance rating for the past year. The proposed merits would include a $50,000 salary increase and a five-year extension of his term to run through June 30th, 2030.

Tomorrow night’s meeting is open to the public and begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center.
