Yucca Valley Planning Commission: sidewalk displays part of larger discussion on Highway 62 improvements

At last night’s meeting, the Yucca Valley Planning Commission discussed potential standards to implement for outdoor sidewalk displays, commonly found at secondhand stores to attract attention.

The Planning Commission had previously discussed ways to standardize unregulated displays at a meeting in November. Suggestions included limiting displays to a percentage of frontage space, a limit on item count, requiring a permit, and requiring the displays to be temporary. The Commission provided a second round of feedback on the matter, echoing prior sentiments that the displays should be aesthetically pleasing and hold a specific purpose, such as advertising a sale or providing a seating area, rather than simply extending floor space.

The presentation was one of several related to regulation of pop-ups on Highway 62; street vendors, food trucks, and commercial special events are on the docket for the next set of Town Council and Planning Commission meetings in Yucca Valley.

The Planning Commission received the Land Development Report. Starbucks West, the Star Cafe, and the Jersey Mike’s and Domino’s Pizza locations are ready to pull building permits. Field Station Joshua Tree, or the former Travelodge, requires a series of improvements before the town will approve it for opening. The Tiny Pony has also submitted a Land Use Compliance Review to add seating and patio covers to their outdoor space.

In an update on the Aquatics and Recreation Center project, Town Staff applied to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Department to remove several Western Joshua Trees impeding the build on the property. Town Staff is still waiting to hear a status update from the Fish and Wildlife Department.
