The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted last night to move forward with a longshot plan for the County to secede from the state of California. The concept, put forward in a July meeting by Jeff Burum, a real estate developer from Rancho Cucomonga, has gained traction among board members, who feel that San Bernardino County is contributing more to the state than it is receiving in return. The measure was approved to be on the ballot at a short Supervisors meeting last night.
The language of the advisory measure does not specifically seek secession, but instead requests that the Board of Supervisors, quote, “study all options to obtain its fair share of state and federal resources, up to and including secession”
Even with the measure, it is unlikely that San Bernardino County will secede from California and become its own state. No new states have been added to the United States since 1959. Instead, supervisors and elected officials within the county who are in favor of this measure see it is a means to bring more state and federal funding to the area while improving its reputation.
