Twentynine Palms City Council to select new mayor in final meeting of 2025

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will meet for their final gathering of the year. The meeting will kick off with an introduction of incoming Sheriff Captain Steve Scovel, and a proper send-off to Captain Robert Warrick, who is taking on a new assignment.
Next, Joshua Tree National Park will present some gratitude and recognition to the Twentynine Palms Inn. Anna Stump and Audrey Philpot will be honored for their successful efforts on the 29 Palms Music Festival Series Grant. The Twentynine Palms Youth Council will update the city council on their achievements thus far, and the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) will also provide a review of their 2025 accomplishments.
One item within the Consent Calendar (issues usually not up for discussion and approved with a single vote) may cause some Indian Cove residents concern. Within the Twentynine Palms’ Five-Year Strategic Plan, there is the sentence, “Support future development and operation of upcoming Ofland lodging development.” Since residents near the proposed development have filed a suit against the developers, there is likely to be opposing comments.
Outgoing Mayor Steven Bilderain will present the Mayor’s Recognition Award and Employee of the Year Award before council turns to the matter of selecting a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem.
The council generally follows a procedure determined at the city’s incorporation in 1987, wherein, there’s a general rotation of the positions among the five council members based on the number of votes received in
the initial election. However, this is not legally binding and council may opt to have the City Clerk simply ask for nominations and hold a vote.
The meeting takes place on Tuesday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road.
