Twentynine Palms City Council to assess storm response and remaining damage

Tonight’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting will include a closed-door conference with the city’s lawyer at 5:30 p.m. regarding a national prescription opiate litigation matter.

At 6:00 p.m., the public meeting kicks off with a summary report from city staff on the damaging storm that hit Twentynine Palms last weekend.

Next, the council will hold three public hearings, the first on a request to increase a maintenance area on Mimosa Avenue from Florida Drive and Sunnyslope Drive. The next on development code amendments to Home Occupation Permits, and a final hearing on amendments to Article 4 Part 1 concerning mostly design standards, cargo containers, fences, and walls.

The council will then discuss its possible participation in the nation-wide opioid settlement with Kroger Company. (The settlement is $1.2B but the city would be allocated just a sliver of that – roughly 0.002 percent – approximately $1,711.10.) Any settlement funds the city might receive may only be used for opioid-abatement-related uses, which do not exist in the city. The deadline to participate is August 12.

Before adjournment, the council will circle back to the July 14-15 storm and review any lingering issues or damages that must be addressed. The meeting takes place on Tuesday, July 23, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road. It can be livestreamed or viewed on-demand via the city’s website, www.29palms.org.
