Twentynine Palms City Council meets tonight (5/23) to discuss money, sewer and solar

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will gather for a public hearing and a full agenda involving city finances, sewer fees, a potential commercial solar farm, and a possible change to Vacation Home Rental insurance requirements.

The Twentynine Palms City Council will gather this evening and host a public hearing on the Proposed Two-Year General Fund Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. Key elements will be the Annual Spending Plan, the Employee Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), the Wage Scale and Classification Schedule, and two Inter-fund transfers for FY 2023-2024: One is from the General Fund to Capital Projects Fund: $160K for self-funding; $105K for the purchase of a vehicle for Animal Control; and $5K to be put aside for the acquisition of a street sweeper. The other transfer is $65K from the General Fund to the Sewer Fund for fund’s subsidy.

Next the City Manager’s Written Report is all about the intention to levy sewer fees on property owners and businesses in the Project Phoenix area (south side of Highway 62 between Tamarisk and Cholla Avenues) for Fiscal year 2023-2024.

The council will discuss a potential 175-acre commercial solar farm on the north side of Two Mile Road and west of Sunrise Road. The developer, E-Group, sent a letter to the city noting that if the city blocks the development, “E-Group will pursue approvals through the permitting process recently established through
Assembly Bill 205, which is intended to facilitate the approval of renewable energy projects by the state without any local approval.”

Finally, the council will discuss a possible reduction to the insurance requirement for Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) from $1M to $500K pending an updated policy from the city’s planning commission.

The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road. The event will also be livestreamed and provided on-demand via the city’s website, www.29palms.org
