The suspect in a hit-and-run collision that killed Yucca Valley teenager Joshua Barreras was in court for a disposition hearing yesterday morning. Troy Reynolds is accused of striking the victim with a truck and fleeing the scene on the evening of January 26. Sheriff’s deputies found Barreras lying unresponsive in the center median of Twentynine Palms Highway near Avalon Ave. The teen was pronounced deceased at the Hi-Desert Medical Center later that night.
The prosecution requested a continuance based on a need for more time to conduct additional discovery research. Judge Rasheed Alexander, who presided over the hearing, granted the request. The next court date is scheduled for October 9.
The victim’s family was also in attendance at the hearing. Barreras’ grandmother Sherry Moreno expressed disappointment that there was an additional delay in the proceedings.
Sherry Moreno: “I want to get this behind us and try to move on. At the same time, I want the attorneys to have a chance to get all the facts together. Either way, it is still a hit-and-run. He could have been the difference between my grandson’s life and death if he had just stopped.”
Troy Reynolds is charged with Felony Hit and Run Resulting in Permanent Injury or Death; he is currently out on $500,000 bail.
