Reports of a possible shooting at Yucca Valley High School have been determined by the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station to be unfounded, and classes will continue today (September 22) as normal. Yesterday (September 21), Sheriff’s Deputies received numerous calls reporting rumors that a school shooting at Yucca Valley High School was planned for today.
Deputies investigated the source of the rumors, and determined that their origin was a conversation between a student and a member of school staff. That conversation was overhead by other students, and remarks made in the conversation were taken out of context and shared with other students. The investigation determined that, despite rumors, there was no threat of a school shooting today, and classes will resume as normal, though the investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
This is the second threat of a school shooting at a Morongo Unified School District school this school week. An unidentified 13 year-old was arrested on suspicion of making a threats against Twentynine Palms Junior High School on Monday (September 19).
Though the reports of a school shooting in this incident proved to be unfounded, members of the community coming forward with information is one of the most important ways to prevent violence.
