Superintendent Vargas discusses literacy and adding book vending machines to MUSD campuses

On last Friday’s Up-Close show, host Gary Daigneault spoke to MUSD Superintendent Dr. Patricio Vargas and Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Amy Woods about the district’s various approaches to bolstering literacy among students.

Dr. Vargas and Amy Woods announced the expansion of MUSD’s “Reader by 9” initiative, a District-wide campaign aiming to ensure all students achieve reading proficiency by the end of third grade. This ambitious initiative is part of the district’s commitment to lay a strong educational foundation and empower students with the skills they need for lifelong success. As part of the Reader by 9 initiative, Woods mentioned the addition of vending machines that will be offering something far healthier for the mind than chips or candy bars:

“We have a really cool concept coming into the schools this year—book vending machines. It integrates into a lot of our positive behavior intervention and incentive systems, where students can earn tokens they can use on the book vending machines and we’re even going to have one at the district office for best-selling books for our shout-outs. So, we are trying to make reading a priority and bring back that love and excitement for reading.”
