Newly named Superintendent of Joshua Tree National Park Jane Rodgers was the guest on Z107.7’s Up Close Show last week. Host Gary Daigneault asked Rodgers about how the park’s attendance is impacted by the excessive heat we’ve been experiencing in the high desert this summer. Rodgers said:
“I’m sure everyone listening remembers that our June numbers were amazing. It was unseasonably cool and we had a record breaking June. Whether you’re local or traveling, people pay attention to the weather, and they’re watching that, and they’re making their travel decisions based on that. Comparing that with July, it’s very different, as it should be.
“We are definitely trying to get the message out there to plan ahead, and think before they drive out this way.
When asked what tips Rodgers can offer to Joshua Tree National Park Visitors so they can stay safe in the heat, she said,
“My number one advice is simple. Plan ahead. Look at the weather, look at the forecast, understand when it’s going to be the hottest part of the day. And I know that locals know this, but there is no cellular telephone coverage in the parks. So if there’s an emergency situation, a heat-related illness, that causes another layer of safety concern. You can hear the full interview with Superintendent Rodgers by listening to the Up Close Show as a podcast below – and subscribe to all of Z107.7’s podcasts right here.
