Groundwork Arts ensures that students, their families, and teachers have equitable access to the arts. The year-long “Signs of Courage” project has evolved from that commitment into a striking public art installation. The artists, former sixth graders (now seventh graders) from the Morongo Unified School District, in collaboration with Groundwork Arts teaching artists, will exhibit thirty-eight professionally produced street signs, each bearing an inspiring or heartfelt message from a student.
Under the guidance of Groundwork Arts teaching artists, students learned how to transform their thoughts and ideas into powerful visual statements. They explored messaging, graphic imagery, typeface, color, and shape, creating 509 unique, hand-painted signs, each one a message of resilience and support. Thirty-eight of these signs were chosen by peers, teachers, and Groundwork Arts staff to be printed as large-scale art signs.
The messages are:
“We Are All People”
“You’re Enough”
“Take up Space”
“Let Your Heart Bloom”
“Speak Out: Voice Your Opinion”
An exhibition of these bold expressions of hope and encouragement will be on display at the 29 Palms Freedom Plaza Community Center on Saturday, September 7, during the Farmer’s Market from 8 am to 1 pm.
Join the Awards Ceremony and see the film screening of this project, from lessons to the final creation, from 11 am to 12 pm. The signs will remain on display at Freedom Plaza Square, off Hwy 62, for an Extended Public Art Installation from September 7 through September 30.
