Weather has cooled and the monsoons have slowed down here in the Morongo Basin – but there are still road closures out there in our parks and preserves.
The only road still closed in Joshua Tree National Park is the Geology Road tour road – from the northern gate to Berdoo canyon. This is a temporary closure due to flash flood damage.
In the Mojave National Preserve the following roads remain CLOSED: Zzyzx Road, Kelbaker Road between Baker and Kelso, Black Canyon Road between Cedar Canyon Road and Essex Road, Mojave Road on Soda Lake from preserve boundary to Kelbaker Rd, and Mojave Road in Paiute Gorge.
Barstow HQ and the Kelso Depot Visitor Center are also still Closed.
In Death Valley National Park Many roads are closed due to flooding, debris and pavement loss from those heavy monsoons. This includes CA 190 west of Stovepipe Wells and Badwater Road. The closure of 190 has resulted in no through roads from the Western to Eastern parts of the park.
Despite cooler weather and rainfall – Smokey Bear reports that our fire danger in the Hi-Desert is still very high with wildfires around the state – so please be careful out there. When heading out into the beautiful Hi-Desert – always let someone know where you are going, carry lots of water and if those monsoon rains start coming down and the road floods, turn around, don’t drown.
