Most of us know that California is in a serious drought. In fact, January through March this year was our state’s driest in more than a century. Morongo Basin residents have a good track record of keeping water consumption rates among the lowest in the state.
Each of us must look for ways to conserve water. Bathing, cleaning your home, and maintaining your property each present an opportunity to use less water, but watering your trees does not. Trees offer many benefits such as erosion control, cooling shade, wildlife habitat, windbreak, and natural beauty according to Save Our Water, a division of the California Department of Water Resources. Residents may neglect watering their trees when attempting to conserve water because they’re worried about water waste, but this can stress trees and cause them to deteriorate or die. For the most efficient use of water make sure to water in the early morning or evening, use plenty of mulch, and avoid watering at the trunk.
