Update 02/28/25: This water haul has been cancelled and the tanks were refilled during the last rainstorm
Thirsty bighorn sheep are in need of a drink in the Mojave National Preserve. If you have a capable 4×4 with a full size bed that can hold a “water cube” or you can hike in rugged country to help lay hoses and man pumps, then the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep could use your help.
It was a dry winter and these big game guzzlers collect rainwater throughout the year to provide threatened bighorn sheep with a reliable water source. However, when rain isn’t falling it’s up to humans to haul water deep into the desert and refill the water tanks.
The volunteers also inspect equipment and get to hike around some protected wilderness that others don’t have open access to, and there is a good possibility you’ll see a bighorn sheep in the wild.
If you think your 4×4 is tough enough or you just want to get out into the wild desert on a beautiful day to help out some thirsty animals, follow the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep on Facebook or visit their website at www.sheepsociety.com.
You can contact Scotty Gibson from the California Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation for details on volunteering.
